Install OpnEarth

How to install OpnEarth on a Mac or a Windows PC and open it the first time.

Get OpnEarth

OpnEarth is in early access. Register and we email you a download link when your turn comes.

Install

  • Mac: open the .dmg and drag OpnEarth into Applications.
  • Windows: run the installer.

Check the system requirements first.

The first launch

OpnEarth is not yet signed with an Apple or Microsoft publisher certificate. Your computer warns about any app it cannot match to a known publisher, so it asks you to confirm the first time you open OpnEarth. After that, OpnEarth opens normally and updates do not ask again.

On a Mac

These steps work on every supported version of macOS.

  1. Open OpnEarth from Applications. macOS says it cannot check the app.
  2. Close the message with Done or Cancel, not Move to Trash.
  3. Open System Settings, then Privacy & Security.
  4. Scroll down to the OpnEarth message and click Open Anyway.
  5. Click Open Anyway again if macOS asks, then confirm with your login password or Touch ID.

On macOS 14 or earlier there is a shortcut: Control-click OpnEarth in Applications and choose Open. macOS 15 and later no longer offer it.

On Windows

  1. If your browser warns that the file is not commonly downloaded, open its downloads list and choose the option to keep the file (in Edge: … > Keep, then Show more > Keep anyway).
  2. Open the installer.
  3. If you see Windows protected your PC, click More info.
  4. Click Run anyway, then follow the installer.

Still blocked?

  • Mac, no Open Anyway button: it shows for about an hour after you try to open the app. Open OpnEarth again, then go back to Privacy & Security.
  • Mac, “OpnEarth is damaged and can’t be opened”: move OpnEarth to the Trash, download it again and drag it into Applications. If the message comes back, open Terminal, paste this line and press Return, then open OpnEarth again: xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/OpnEarth.app
  • Windows, no Run anyway button: right-click the installer, choose Properties, tick Unblock on the General tab, click OK and open it again.
  • Windows, blocked by Smart App Control or your organisation: that PC runs only apps Microsoft recognises or that are signed by a known publisher. Ask your IT team, or use OpnEarth in your browser with Pro.

To check that your download is ours, compare the SHA-256 fingerprint of the downloaded .dmg (Mac) or setup .exe (Windows) with the one listed on your download page: shasum -a 256 in Terminal on a Mac, Get-FileHash in PowerShell on Windows. Upper or lower case does not matter.

Still stuck? Write to hello@opnearth.com and we will help you get it open.

Open a file

The start screen says No file open. To open a KML or KMZ file:

  • Drag the file anywhere onto the window.
  • Click Open file on the start screen.
  • Choose File > Open…, or press Ctrl+O (⌘+O on a Mac).

On a Mac you can also double-click a KML or KMZ file in the Finder once OpnEarth has run once.

OpnEarth requires an active trial or paid plan. Click Sign in in the title bar. Your browser opens, you confirm, and OpnEarth turns on your plan.

Once you are signed in, the full guide is in your account under Help.
